Thought of the Day – Monday

Here is the text of what Graham shared this morning:

Good morning. Proverbs is part of the wisdom literature of the Bible, mostly written by Solomon, who in his time was one of the wisest men in the world.

Chapter 1 verse 2 tells us the purpose of the book – “for gaining wisdom and instruction”.

Proverbs contains speeches and pithy sayings – wisdom about how to navigate a perplexing and confusing world. It’s advice to help us through life and includes many sayings that are shockingly direct and highly amusing. “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion” is going to get a reaction anywhere you say it! It gets us thinking.

So it’s about wisdom but it’s so much more than just observations about what’s generally true about the way life works.

The key verse of the whole book is in Chapter 9 verse 10:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and
knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

True wisdom starts with respecting, loving and honouring God and listening to him. Honouring God will shape every part of our life.

Live wisely today as you listen to God’s wisdom, found ultimately and beautifully in Jesus Christ.
